Introduction

In the distant future, humanity took to the stars. It is at this time they faced a crisis of their own making.

A supercomputer AI named Nadine went rogue after going online, taking control over much of our space forces. War had broken out, pitting human against controlled machines for Nadine's calculated plans against us.

We require a solution to deal with Nadine, quickly, before it can wipe out all humanity. What was proposed was a rather bold and dangerous, but neccessary plan: Our forces will engage Nadine's rogue fleet. While distracted, the player will operate our most advanced craft capable of dealing with Nadine's forces of all sizes, make a beeline for Nadine's ship and destroy it. With its' destruction, all of the forces under its' control will become inoperative, ending the war.

The Mission is near- suicidal, but it is our best chance for victory... Good luck.

This version of Nadine's Fleet has additional features and options not found in the original version (Which will be kept in it's original form since it was the submission to GB JAM 11).

Gameplay

Players will navigate 15 levels. Each level is progressively more difficult as the player will fight their way through endless waves of enemies to reach and defeat a boss at the end.
Nadine itself represents the final boss on level 15.

Players have hull and shield points. Shield points will slowly recover. Both shield and hull points can be restored if the appropriate items. If the player runs out of hull and shield points, the craft will be destroyed and the game is over. Colliding with enemies will cause the craft to take damage and a boss must always be physically avoided.

Players can collect items on each level. They can recover stats, boost capabilities, add bonus points and can even destroy everything on the screen.

Tenders show up between levels. They cannot be detected by the enemy, but they are incapable of fighting. Take advantage of their presence to recover your craft's strength and switch out available weapons.

Every 5,000 points a new weapon is made available at the tender.

Upgrades

Protector: Recharges health and shields after receiving a fatal blow

Love Bomb: Lives up to a name since pilots LOVE to use this.  Destroys all regular craft on the screen.

Missile Pack: Adds missiles to the ship's arsenal

Bullet Barrier: Protects the ship from stray bullets on the battlefield.

Fire Rate Up: Increases the rate of fire.

Speed Burst: Adds a booster.  Hold down X/O to activate it and temporarily double the craft's speed.

Additional Drops

Repair Body: Recovers all hull points on the craft.

Shields Up: Recovers some shield points.

Full Shields: Recovers all shields.

Destroy All: Destroys all the regular craft on the screen.

Bonus Points: Adds points to the player's score.

Weapons

Forward Gun:  Fast rate of fire through a limited, low-power arc.

Spread Gun: Blankets the screen with a large number of shots. Lacks in forward firepower, but can hit targets in more vulnerable directions.

Wave Cannon: Attack spreads out, improving the odds of hitting a forward target.

Railgun: Fires a fast, powerful shot. Slow rate of fire.

Kaboom Cannon: Fires a grenade that explodes, dealing damage in the affected area.

Burst Laser: Fires three piercing lasers. Covers a large area, but has a slow recharge time.

Latest Updates

Version 1.02 (December 7th, 2023)

 Fixes

  • Fixed a game-killing bug that would happen if a player tried to change a palette while the game was paused.  Thank you to a.j.outlaster for noticing this for me.

Version 1.01 (October 10th, 2023)

 Add-ons

  • Added a 2nd page to the Options section.
  • Added 15 more palettes and the option to switch between them.
  • Added an 'Enemy Hit' and 'Powerup Destroyed' sound effect. 'Enemy Hit' applies to anything that can be hit by a player's weapon.
  • Added a 'Shields Down' sound effect that plays when the shields get taken down.
  • Added a 'gameplay demo' that cycles between four demos as the player waits on the menu screen, given a useful example of how gameplay is.

Updates

  • Changed the background on the Options page.
  • Adjusted the high score page.
  • Minor layout updates to all the fortress maps and one planet map.

Fixes

  • Found a minor animation glitch with the 'blinking' on the title screen.
  • Fixed an issue where explosions were not showing up on enemies that were destroyed with 'DESTROY ALL' or 'LOVE BOMB'.
  • Fixed an arrow alignment when going from Pause menu to Options.
  • Fixed a missing pixel in the game's title.
  • Several complaints were made about the player's hitbox. 2 units was shaved off the width of the box and the height was carefully checked to make sure all values matched whatever was the lowest one set (and that is as much as the game developer is willing to compromise).
  • Fixed a 'possible' issue where if the player dies after killing a boss, the game may still continue.
  • Fixed the hitbox misalignment issue with smaller profile enemy targets.
  • Fixed positions of many enemy types; Most of them are a pixel shift (or two) to the left if their spawn points are not randomized.

This feels very much like one of my favourite games ever... Silpheed. Very nicely done shoot-em-up!

Thank you!  There was definitely some inspiration from the original DOS/PC-88 version of the game (Given there was a time limit on making this game, having it helped the process).
